1. What is the UL 969 Standard?

UL 969 (standard for Marking and Labeling Systems) governs the durability, legibility, and permanence of labels used for critical safety warnings, serial plates, electrical ratings, and hazard notices on manufactured equipment. In Canada, the equivalent testing standard is CSA C22.2 No. 0.15.

Unlike standard consumer stickers, a UL 969 certified label is evaluated as a complete system comprising:

1. Substrate / Surface
Stainless steel, aluminum, powder-coated steel, ABS, polypropylene
2. Face Stock & Adhesive
Specific Brady B-number (e.g. B-423, B-483A, B-427)
3. Thermal Ribbon
Specific tested ribbon (e.g. Series R6000HF, R4300)
Critical Engineering Rule: UL recognition is void if an unapproved ribbon is substituted. To maintain UL compliance on your product, you must print the recognized Brady B-number with its corresponding tested ribbon series.

2. UL 969 CCN Category Codes (PGJI2 vs PGDQ2)

UL classifies marking materials under distinct Category Control Numbers (CCNs):

PGJI2 / PGJI8 — Printing Materials (Blank Thermal Labels)Component Recognition

Covers blank label stock intended for secondary thermal transfer printing by the end user or OEM. Brady materials listed under File MH17154 and MH64936 are recognized under PGJI2.

PGDQ2 / PGDQ8 — Marking and Labeling Systems (Finished Labels)Pre-Printed Labels

Covers completely finished, pre-printed labels manufactured by an authorized printing facility and shipped ready to apply.
