Brady B-427: Thermal Transfer Printable Translucent Vinyl Tape

B-427 is a thermal transfer printable translucent vinyl tape supplied in a self-laminating format with a white printable zone and a translucent overlaminating area on a permanent acrylic adhesive, and the sheet describes it as an excellent material for wire and cable identification. It is not recommended for use in harsh organic solvents — the sheet names methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, and 1,1,1-trichloroethane — and in the chemical resistance testing Skydrol 500B-4 destroyed the substrate/adhesive. Its UL969A and UL2238 Section 37.16 Recognitions apply only when the label is printed with Brady Series R4300 and R7950 ribbons, and Brady sells both Recognized and non-approved B-427 labels, so the customer must specify at purchase if they need the Recognized version.

• Harsh organic solvents — The sentence printed immediately below the last row of the chemical resistance table (MIL-H-5606 Oil), with no row label of its own, reads: "B-427 is not recommended for use in harsh organic solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, or 1,1,1-trichloroethane." It names the product as a whole, not a single tested row.
• Skydrol 500B-4 — On the Skydrol® 500B-4 row, the Substrate/Adhesive column reads "Material destroyed". The Series R4300 Ribbon column on that same row reads "NA"; the sheet prints NA without defining it, so no ribbon verdict can be read from that cell.
• Gasoline — On the Gasoline row, the Substrate/Adhesive column reads "Moderate unwrap". The Series R4300 Ribbon column on that same row reads "No visible effect". This is the only other reagent row on the sheet whose substrate/adhesive result is not "No visible effect".
• UL969A Recognition is ribbon-conditional and must be specified at purchase — "B-427 is UL Recognized to UL969A Labeling and Marking Standard when printed with the Brady Series R4300 and R7950 ribbons. See UL files MH64936 (Brady Worldwide, INC.) and MH9997 (W H Brady NV) for specific details. Brady customers should specify at purchase if they require UL969A Recognized B-427 labels. Brady sells both UL969 Recognized B-427 labels and non-approved labels depending on customer requirements." • R7950 ribbon is named in both UL approvals but is not in the recommended ribbons list — The recommended ribbons printed on the sheet are R4300 black, R4400, R4500 colored (red, blue, green), R6200 and R6700. R7950 appears only in the two UL Recognition statements.
• Weee-RoHS compliance status is not stated on the sheet — The sheet gives only pointers: "For information on the Weee-RoHS compliance status for a Brady Product go to one of the following websites: In Canada: www.bradycanada.ca/weee-rohs / In Europe: www.bradyeurope.com/rohs / In Japan: www.brady.co.jp/products/labelsuse/rohs / All other regions: www.bradyid.com/weee-rohs". No status, result or date is printed.
• Test results are scoped to one printed and mounted configuration — Both the performance properties and the chemical resistance tables are prefaced with notes stating the samples were the white printable zone of B-427 printed with Brady Series R4300 black thermal transfer ribbon, wrapped around 0.080" OD TFE wire in a self-laminating format. The sheet reports no results for the other recommended ribbons or for other substrates.
• Chemical resistance test conditions — "Except where noted, testing was conducted at room temperature after 24 hour dwell. Testing consisted of 5 cycles of a 10 minute immersion in the specified test fluid followed by a 30 minute recovery period." Results outside these conditions are not reported.
• Shelf life and fitness for use — "Shelf Life and Fitness for Use: Product testing, customer feedback, and history of similar products, support a customer performance expectation of one year from the date of receipt for this product as long as this product is stored in its original packaging in an environment below 80°F (27°C) and 60% RH. However, it remains the responsibility of the user to assess the risk of using such product. We encourage customers to develop functional testing protocols that will qualify a product's fitness for use, in their actual applications."
