Brady B-417: Thermal Transfer Printable Translucent Vinyl Tape

Brady B-417 is a thermal transfer printable translucent vinyl tape supplied self-laminating, with a white printable zone and a translucent overlaminating area over a permanent acrylic adhesive, intended for wire and cable identification. Self-Laminating 360° Overlap Wrap Installation
1Position the white opaque printable zone directly against the copper/PVC wire insulation.
2Wrap the cable firmly so the clear transparent overlaminate tail wraps 360° completely around the wire.
3Ensure the clear tail overlaps the printed text by at least 1/4" to seal against oils, solvents, and abrasion.
Engineering Tolerance: Recommended Overlap: 360° full circumference + 0.25" to 0.50" clear tail overlap.

Engineering Limitations & Chemical Fitness Warnings

Extracted directly from Brady Technical Data Sheets to prevent real-world application failures and chemical degradation:

  • UL Recognition (conditional on ribbon): "B-417 is UL Recognized to UL969 Labeling and Marking Standard when printed with the Brady Series R4300 and R7950 ribbons. See UL files MH62024 for specific details." The sheet states this recognition only for those two ribbons. Note that R7950 does not appear in the sheet's RECOMMENDED RIBBONS list, and the sheet states no UL status for the other recommended ribbons (R4400, R4500 colored, R6200, R6700).
  • Weee-RoHS compliance status is not stated on the sheet: the sheet gives only pointers, not a status. "For information on the Weee-RoHS compliance status for a Brady Product go to one of the following websites: In Canada: www.bradycanada.ca/weee-rohs / In Europe: www.bradyeurope.com/rohs / In Japan: www.brady.co.jp/products/labelsuse/rohs / All other regions: www.bradyid.com/weee-rohs"
  • Not recommended for harsh organic solvents: "B-417 is not recommended for use in harsh organic solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, or 1,1,1-trichloroethane." This sentence sits immediately below the final row of the chemical resistance table (MIL-H-5606 Oil) and carries no row label of its own. It names B-417 as a whole rather than any single reagent row.
  • High service temperature result covers a condition not listed in its own test method cell: the TYPICAL RESULTS cell of the High Service Temperature row reads "No visible effect at 158°F (70°C). Moderate discoloration at 193°F (90°C) but still functional." The TEST METHODS cell for that same row states only "30 days at 158°F (70°C)". The sheet does not state a test duration or method for the 193°F (90°C) observation.
  • Chemical resistance results apply only to the tested configuration: the paragraph directly above the chemical resistance table reads "White printable zone of B-417 was printed with Brady Series R4300 black thermal transfer ribbon. Samples wrapped around 0.080" OD TFE wire in a self-laminating format. Except where noted, testing was conducted at room temperature after 24 hour dwell. Testing consisted of 5 cycles of a 10 minute immersion in the specified test fluid followed by a 30 minute recovery period."
  • Unlabeled note between the two property tables, scope not stated: "Performance properties tested with white printable zone of B-417 printed with Brady Series R4300 black thermal transfer ribbon. Samples wrapped around 0.080" OD TFE wire in a self-laminating format." This note is positioned directly beneath the physical properties table (whose last row is Flammability) and directly above the PERFORMANCE PROPERTIES table heading. Its wording refers to performance properties while its position is under the physical properties table; the sheet does not say which table it governs.
  • All non-"No visible effect" chemical results appear in the substrate/adhesive column only: Mineral Spirits "Slight edge lift", Gasoline "Moderate unwrap", and JP-8 Jet Fuel "Slight edge lift" are each printed in the SUBSTRATE/ADHESIVE column. The SERIES R4300 RIBBON column reads "No visible effect" for every reagent row on the sheet.
  • "Cleaners and Solvents" category row carries printed results: it is set as a reagent-category heading in the same style as "Fuels, Oils and Lubricants" and "Aerospace Related Fluids", but unlike those two, whose result cells are blank, its row carries "No visible effect" in both result columns. The sheet does not state what those two results apply to.
  • Shelf life and fitness for use: "Product testing, customer feedback, and history of similar products, support a customer performance expectation of one year from the date of receipt for this product as long as this product is stored in its original packaging in an environment below 80°F (27°C) and 60% RH. However, it remains the responsibility of the user to assess the risk of using such product."
  • Values are averages, not specification values: "Note: All values shown are averages and should not be used for specification purposes." The sheet adds: "Test data and test results contained in this document are for general information only and shall not be relied upon by Brady customers for designs and specifications, or be relied on as meeting specified performance criteria."
