Brady B-724: Thermal Transfer Printable Polyimide Label Stock

B-724 is a thermal transfer printable polyimide label stock for printed circuit board and electronic component pre-process labeling. It is not recommended for outdoor use — the sheet carries that as a footnote on the weatherability row, where 1000 hours in a Xenon Arc Weather-Ometer degraded the topcoat. Printed with the Brady Series R4300 ribbon it is designed to survive high heat wave solder and multiple cycles of harsh PCB washes, though Brady notes topcoat degradation may be seen in certain aqueous chemistries.

Engineering Limitations & Chemical Fitness Warnings

Extracted directly from Brady Technical Data Sheets to prevent real-world application failures and chemical degradation:

  • Not for outdoor use. Footnote 1 on the performance properties table, printed below the table: "B-724 is not recommended for outdoor use." The superscript 1 marker appears on the Weatherability row label only.
  • Aqueous wash chemistries can degrade the topcoat. From Special Features: "B-724 is designed to withstand multiple cycles of harsh condition washes for printed circuit boards. Degradation of topcoat may be seen in certain aqueous chemistries."
  • Standards conformance is tied to one specific configuration. From Special Features: "B-724 in combination with the Series R4300 ribbon passes the requirements of: MIL-STD-202G, Method 215K" and "SAE AS81531 Marking of Electrical Insulating Material". The sheet states this pass only for the B-724 plus Series R4300 ribbon combination and gives no result for B-724 with any other ribbon.
  • Solvent resistance results are reported for one ribbon only. The MIL-STD-202G, Method 215 K solvent resistance table has a single results column headed "RESULTS R4300"; all three "Meets requirement" verdicts belong to that column. No other ribbon configuration is reported.
  • Regulatory approvals: the sheet does not state a compliance status. Under "REGULATORY APPROVALS" it says only: "For information on the Weee-RoHS compliance status for a Brady Product go to one of the following websites:" followed by In Canada www.bradycanada.ca/weee-rohs, In Europe www.bradyeurope.com/rohs, In Japan www.brady.co.jp/products/labelsuse/rohs, All other regions www.bradyid.com/weee-rohs. Status must be looked up per region; it is not on this sheet.
  • Compliance data provenance disclaimer: "Product compliance information is based upon information provided by suppliers of the raw materials used by Brady to manufacture this product or based on results of testing using recognized analytical methods performed by a third party, independent laboratory. As such, Brady makes no independent representations or warranties, express or implied, and assumes no liability in connection with the use of this information."
  • Values are averages and are not specification values. From the Note near the end of the sheet: "All values shown are averages and should not be used for specification purposes. Test data and test results contained in this document are for general information only and shall not be relied upon by Brady customers for designs and specifications, or be relied on as meeting specified performance criteria. Customers desiring to develop specifications or performance criteria for specific product applications should contact Brady for further information."
  • Fitness for use is the customer's to validate. From the Performance paragraph: "It remains the responsibility of the user to assess the risk of using this product. We recommend customers develop test protocols to validate the product's fitness for use in their actual application."
  • Field performance may differ from the table. Unlabeled sentence sitting between the physical properties table and the performance properties table, not attached to any row: "Actual performance in customer applications may vary due to differences in environment, surface types, chemistries, conditions, and any physical contact with the label during processing."
  • Optional process step for harsh exposure, stated in Special Features: "Preheat can be employed to further enhance print permanence in the case of extreme solvent and/or abrasion exposure."
