Brady B-7642: PermaSleeve® Marker

B-7642 PermaSleeve® is a thermal-transfer-printed, heat-shrinkable (2:1) polyolefin sleeve for wire identification and insulation, supplied in flattened roll form on a carrier designed for computer driven printers, in white and yellow (other colors available for specials). It has to be heat-recovered to work — Brady recommends a minimum recovery temperature of 85°C (185°F), and any industrial grade heat gun may be used to shrink it. Two limits before quoting anything off this sheet: Brady states all values are averages that "should not be used for specification purposes," and the five-year performance expectation only holds while the product stays in its original packaging below 27°C (80°F) and 60% RH.

3:1 Heat-Shrink Sleeve Recovery Procedure
1Slide the unrecovered tubular sleeve over the wire lead prior to connector crimping.
2Position sleeve at the desired marker distance from the terminal pin.
3Apply focused hot air at 250°F (120°C) with an industrial heat gun until polyolefin shrinks snugly around wire.
Engineering Tolerance: 3:1 Shrink Ratio recovers down to 33% of expanded diameter. Meets SAE-AS-81531 and MIL-STD-202.

Engineering Limitations & Chemical Fitness Warnings

Extracted directly from Brady Technical Data Sheets to prevent real-world application failures and chemical degradation:

  • Regulatory/agency approvals — UL: "B-7642 is a UL Recognized Component to UL224 Extruded Insulated Tubing. See UL file E146526 for specific details." The sheet gives Recognized Component status only and directs the reader to the UL file for specifics rather than restating them.
  • Regulatory/agency approvals — RoHS: "Brady B-7642 is compliant to 2005/618/EC MCV amendment to RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC."
  • Standards conformance is limited to named classes: "B-7642 PermaSleeve® Markers meet the material and functional requirements of SAE-AMS-DTL-23053/5 (Class 1 and 3) for Insulation Sleeving." No claim is made for other classes of that specification.
  • Application condition: "A minimum recovery temperature of 85°C (185°F) is recommended for B-7642 PermaSleeve® markers."
  • Color availability: "B-7642 is available in white and yellow. Other colors are available for specials."
  • Testing scope excludes one recommended ribbon: R6000 Halogen Free Series is listed under RECOMMENDED RIBBONS, but both the performance properties preamble and the chemical resistance preamble name only the R4300, R6400 and R6600 Series. The sheet reports no performance or chemical-resistance results for the R6000 Halogen Free Series.
  • Solvent resistance covers three fluids only: the Solvent Resistance row names Solution A, Solution C and Solution D, and its result reads "in all three test fluids." Solution B appears only in the legend below the table, defined as "deleted from MIL-STD-202, Method 215J" — no Solution B result is reported.
  • Results differ by sleeve color on several performance tests: white sleeves show "Slight discoloration" where yellow sleeves show "No visible effect" (24 hours at 160°C; 1000 hours at 120°C; 1000 hours in QUV/Q-Sun and Xenon Arc rows vary further). Each verdict belongs to its own color and its own test condition and must not be carried across to the other.
  • Scope sentence printed above the performance properties table, quoted verbatim because it qualifies that whole table rather than any one row: "The results are the same for both colors and all ribbons unless noted."
  • Scope sentence printed between the chemical resistance method paragraph and the chemical resistance table, quoted verbatim: "Unless otherwise noted, there was no visible effect to the printed image prior to rubbing for the above ribbons."
  • Storage-conditional performance expectation: "Product testing, customer feedback, and history of similar products, support a customer performance expectation of at least five years from the date of receipt for this product as long as this product is stored in its original packaging in an environment below 27°C (80°F) and 60% RH. We encourage customers to develop functional testing protocols that will qualify a product's fitness for use, in their actual applications."
  • Data may not be used as a specification: "Note: All values shown are averages and should not be used for specification purposes." And: "Test data and test results contained in this document are for general information only and shall not be relied upon by Brady customers for designs and specifications, or be relied on as meeting specified performance criteria. Customers desiring to develop specifications or performance criteria for specific product applications should contact Brady for further information."
  • Compliance information is second-hand: "Product compliance information is based upon information provided by suppliers of the raw materials used by Brady to manufacture this product or based on results of testing using recognized analytical methods performed by a third party, independent laboratory. As such, Brady makes no independent representations or warranties, express or implied, and assumes no liability in connection with the use of this information."
  • Warranty: Brady products are sold on the understanding that buyers will test them in actual use and determine adaptability to their intended uses for themselves. The warranty covers freedom from defects in material and workmanship, is limited to replacement of product shown to Brady's satisfaction to have been defective when sold, does not extend to persons obtaining the product from the buyers, and is in lieu of any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Brady is not liable for consequential damages arising from use or inability to use its products.
